AFL Barwon is pleased to announce the appointment of Ayden Gras to the role of Operations Coordinator in the Football Department.

Ayden brings a strong connection to community football across the Barwon region, complemented by valuable experience working within both the AFL system and the broader sports and commercial sectors.

A product of the local football pathway, Ayden played his junior football at St Joseph’s Football Netball Club before continuing his senior career with Anglesea Football Club, where he currently plays. He was also a participant in Barwon-region junior football pathways programs, providing him with a deep understanding of player development and the grassroots football landscape.

Professionally, Ayden has gained experience with AFL Victoria, where he worked across football operations and administration, contributing to the delivery of programs and competitions at a state level. He also brings strong organisational and customer-focused skills from his time with Cotton On.

In his role at AFL Barwon, Ayden will support key football operations functions including competition administration and management across the region. His appointment further strengthens AFL Barwon’s capacity to support clubs, volunteers and participants ahead of the upcoming season.

Ayden said he was excited to return to the region in a professional capacity.

“Having come through the Barwon pathways and played locally, this role is something I’m really passionate about. I’m looking forward to working closely with clubs and contributing to the continued growth and success of football across the region.”

AFL Barwon wishes to provide the following update regarding the Lara Football Netball Club and its efforts to establish a sustainable football program for the 2026 season.

Acknowledging challenges with the senior men’s program, AFL Barwon, AFL Victoria and the Lara FNC Executive have been engaged in collaborative discussions to explore a viable path forward.

However, following a meeting last night with the Lara Sporting Club, Lara FNC has made the decision for its Senior and Reserves football teams to enter recess for the 2026 season. The club’s Geelong Football Netball League–aligned netball program will continue to compete, along with participation in all other AFL Barwon competitions, including senior female football, junior football and junior netball.

While this is undoubtedly a difficult decision for the Lara FNC Executive, it is important to note that Lara FNC continues to operate a successful junior football program, with participation steadily increasing over the past five years. The club’s junior team numbers rank among the top 10 across the region.

Under AFL Barwon By-Law 13.2, clubs are required to field teams in Senior and Reserve football grades, as well as all netball grades from A Grade downward. AFL Barwon has advised Lara FNC that an exemption from this by-law will be granted for the 2026 season.

AFL Barwon remains committed to supporting clubs and players in developing sustainable football and netball programs while protecting the integrity of competitions and the interests of all participating clubs.

AFL Barwon will move to prioritise changes required for the upcoming GFNL season. This will be done collaboratively with GFNL clubs, taking into account the exceptional circumstances and tight timing. More information will be available as this work progresses in the coming week.

AFL Barwon Chair Ashley West said the decision was not taken lightly.

“AFL Barwon appreciates the gravity of the decision made by the Lara Sporting Club this evening. It is an extremely unenviable position for any club, and we acknowledge the careful decision-making process, which considered the broader impacts on the league.

“We remain optimistic that, through strong junior participation in both football and netball, along with recent consolidation in senior netball and senior female football, Lara can rebound strongly from the current senior men’s football challenges. AFL Barwon is fully committed to working with the Lara Sporting Club to rebuild what is a vital growth corridor and an important sporting community and social connection point for the town and region.
