June 21st Preview: Nail-biter weekend of footy

AFL Barwon writer Wil Spence previews this weekend’s men's football matches across the Geelong and Bellarine FNL competitions.

 

Geelong Football Netball League

Bell Park vs St Joseph’s

Hamlyn Park, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Both sides played each other in round three with St Joseph’s victors, Bell Park is looking to change the ledger with a fifth consecutive victory on the cards.

A win against the premiership favourite could catapult their season as we reach the halfway mark.

James Saker’s on-ball brigade will be heavily relied upon against a strong midfield opponent, gun midfielders Jett Bermingham and Fraser Marris should garner plenty of attention averaging over 25 disposals respectively.

Ron Watt’s kick-mark brand of footy should be on display, ranking above average in both statistics.

Both Hickey brothers, Alex and James should have an influence around the ground, the two are averaging over 20 disposals per game.

 

Colac vs Newtown & Chilwell

Central Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Colac sent a statement to the competition defeating flag contender, St Marys by 52 points.

The ultimate challenge is against Newtown who’re looking at a seventh consecutive win, who recently defeated St Joseph’s.

Jason Armistead’s squad rank above average in key indicators of their ball movement, expect the football to move with pace, with the Tigers averaging 56 inside 50’s per game.

Luke Hillman and Jonathan Simpkin will be dangerous inside 50, both averaging over 2 goals per game.

Steve Johnson’s side’s tackle pressure should be a key factor in the outcome of the match, his team currently rates above average in effective tackles, and is plus 8 for forward 50 tackles.

Contested bull, Gennaro Bove will lead the charge, averaging 12.2 contested possessions, and 7 tackles per game.

 

Lara vs North Shore

Lara Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Both sides will be looking for their first win of the season.

Expect plenty of fans to come out to watch a tough combative game of football.

Assume Brett Henderson’s Cats pressure will be evident from the start; his side is plus nine for pressure acts.

Territory could be a deciding factor on the outcome of the game, Sam Purdy and Thomas Gunther both average over 22 disposals per game and will push forward to hit the scoreboard.

For Mark Hounslow’s side, averages of 33.4 clearances per game will have to be bumped up to apply early heat to the Cats backline.

Seagull's duo, Connor Walmsley, Jacob Sammut–Milijevic average 8.1 and 6.9 clearances per game.

South Barwon vs St Mary’s

McDonald Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Either side is coming off a heavy defeat, expect plenty of passion to be on display in the early parts of the game.

South Barwon currently sit seventh, 4-4 win-loss ratio, a loss here could really hurt their finals aspiration hopes.

Mark Neeld’s contested brand of football is what has won them their games, ranking above average.

Tall timber, Ben Kellett’s strength around the contest will be important, averaging just over 10 contested possessions per game, with a host of other names just under 10 contested possessions per game.

Luke Rayner’s outfit were denied of their scoring ability, kicking ten goals compared to their season average of 21. The Saints fast ball movement should be dangerous, averaging 58 inside 50’s per game.

A multitude of stars will be present around the goals, with the likes of Patrick Dowling, Sam Bourke, Chris Jansen and Jarryd Garner all averaging over a goal a game.

 

St Albans vs Leopold

St Albans Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

A contrasting three-week block sees the St Albans in need of a much-needed win, against the reigning premier in search of a top three bye come September.

St Albans clearance game has worked for them all season, ranking above average in this department, effective disposals is what’s hurt Rick Munn’s emerging squad, minus 39.1.

A clean up in this statistic should give plenty of confidence the Saints can take it to the reigning premier like we have seen for much of the season.

Equal second in the goal kicking race, Tom Higgins will need to have a mammoth game up forward, currently averaging 3.4 goals per game.

Leopold’s contested brand of football, particularly over the last month has reached the expectation we saw of them last year, ranking elite with 168 contested possessions per game.

Rick Kelly’s on-ball brigade should garner plenty of contested footy in tight congestion with Logan Wagener, Tate Porter and Billy Ritchie all averaging over 10.5 handballs per game.

 

Geelong West Giants vs Grovedale

West Oval, 2:10PM, Sunday 22nd June, 2025

The Giants got their season back on track with a convincing win against North Shore,

Grovedale were gallant in defeat, trailing by 26-points at three quarter time, which was trimmed down to 11 points, plenty to like from the developing side.

The Giants rate above average for, kicks, handballs and marks, Greg Mallor’s squad clearly understand the style they want to play.

However, the clearances numbers are below average and an area they will look to improve.

Expect a response from the Giants midfielders who are seeing big numbers recently, the return of Tanner Lewis has been influential, averaging 26.5 disposals per game.

Winger turned inside midfielder, Lachlan Taylor, also has been dominant averaging 28.3 disposals per game, to go with six tackles per game, which leads their side.

For the Tiger’s, their strongest statistic all season has been their clearance game, ranking elite for Jacob’s Spolding’s side, they’re plus nine against the Giants, expect Grovedale to try and expose the Giants midfield.

Midfield trio, William Ford, Nathan Deans and Jak Tute all average over 5 clearances per game.

Bellarine Football Netball League

Drysdale vs Queenscliff

Drysdale Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

A disappointing outing from Drysdale last week puts them in a precarious position in a tight competition with emerging Queenscliff their next opponent.

They’re looking for a seventh consecutive win this week.

The Hawks contested possession count was down last week against Barwon Heads, expect Ben Carmichael’s side to hone in on their biggest strength which they rate elite for.

Contested bulls, Ben Fennell, Lachlan Nelis and James Breust all average 13 or more contested possessions per game.

The Couta’s kick – mark brand of footy has allowed for Heath Jameison’s squad to open the ground up and been more efficient going inside 50.

The Couta’s currently rank elite in kicks and are above average for inside 50’s and marks.

At opposite ends of the ground, forward Jonty Rush has been key, averaging a club most 6.7 marks, to go with 1.5 goals per game. Caleb Whitley in defense currently averages 8.1 intercept possessions and 2.7 intercept marks.

 

Ocean Grove vs Anglesea

Shell Road Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Ocean Gove were given a heavy defeat against reigning premier Torquay and will look to respond.

Anglesea are looking to avoid a third consecutive loss, now sitting fifth on the ladder after sitting second, three weeks ago in one of the closest seasons we’ve seen.

A season low of turnovers last week for Dave Farrell’s squad presents optimism, the Grubbers will look to again take pride with their ball use.

Important trio, Gus Bourke, Taj Wyburd and Joshua Lange should all impact the game, averaging 17 or more disposals each.

Contrast to the Grubbers, the Roo’s had a season high for turnovers last week.

A large emphasis on ball use at training would’ve been spoken about by Jordan Keras.

Dylan Featon, Noah McGregor–Dawson and Will Batson should all play an important role with their ball use, all averaging over 13 kicks per game.

 

Portarlington vs Modewarre

Portarlington Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

A come from behind victory against Newcomb gives Portarlington a shot at a third consecutive win.

Modewarre on the other hand are facing the prospect of a third consecutive loss after their devastating defeat to Geelong Amateurs, amid finals aspiration slowly slipping away.

Portarlington’s ability to win the football around the ground over the past two weeks has coach, Nathan Storer licking his lips, as his forwards have had more opportunities inside 50.

Former AFL player, Connor Menadue should be dangerous for Warriors defenders after kicking five last week.

The Warriors had a season high 59 total clearances last week, a trend they would like to continue.

However, their disposal by foot let them down, going at 48% by foot, an improvement in this area could see Mark Hovey’s squad be dangerous forward of centre.

Tom Hornsey and Scott Morter are both averaging over two goals per game.

Newcomb vs Geelong Amateur

Grinter Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

Heartbreak for Newcomb after leading at three quarter time against Portarlington but were overrun in the dying stages.

In contrast, Geelong Amateurs were trailing at three quarter time against Modewarre and managed to snag a late win.

The Power had their second lowest total turnovers for the season, a trend Tony Mirabella would like to continue to see, particularly by foot.

Key players, Josh Saltalamacchia, acting captain Thomas Webster and Dion Johnstone should carry the load, all averaging over 13 kicks per game.

The Ammos present a tough challenge for the Power, their sheer presence around the ground will be hard to contain, Riley Kershaw’s squad are plus 58 for total disposals, ranking elite and rank above average for inside 50’s.

Star midfield trio Blake Sutterby, Tom Gribble and Riley Ferguson present a challenge for a young Power midfield, the trio all lead their club, averaging over 25 disposals per game.

 

Barwon Heads vs Torquay

Howard Harmer Oval, 2:15PM, Saturday 21st June, 2025

A strong bounce back performance by Barwon Heads excites the competition with a must win game against the reigning premier.

Torquay have put their season back on track with some important wins, as they look to consolidate their top three credentials.

The Seagulls inside 50 and scoring ability has been an important factor all season, rating above average.

However, they currently rank below average in clearances, Sam Schaller would be putting his midfield through their paces on the track this week in hopes of a turnaround.

Seagulls intercept player Kyle Polley leads his side in intercept possessions and intercept marks, 9.5 and 2.6 respectively, expect some class out of the back half.

The Tigers ability to win the football in the source supported by their clearance game could pose a threat for the Seagulls.

The Tigers rate elite for inside 50’s and above average for clearances.

Tigers’ guns, Matthew Boag, James Darke and point of difference, Nathan Mifsud should be dangerous around stoppages, averaging 4 or more clearances per game.

Madi Browne appointed head coach of Torquay Netball Club

Torquay Netball Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of former Australian Diamond Madi Browne as head coach on a three-year contract, ushering in a bold new era for the Tigers’ netball program.

A dual Liz Ellis Diamond winner and current sports broadcaster with Fox Netball and SEN 1116, Browne stepped into the head coaching role in June, taking the reins from long-serving A grade coach Sonia Harris.

Browne’s return to local netball drew attention last November when she was unveiled as Torquay’s inaugural senior netball specialist - a role focused on technical development and mentoring. Her new contract will see her lead the club until 2028.

The appointment reflects a shared vision between coach and club to build a strong pathway for junior talent, foster a high-performance culture, and strengthen the presence and reputation of netball across the region.

Bourkey’s Bootride: From a Footy and a Ride to a Movement of Kindness Across Australia

What began as a simple journey with a motorbike and a football has grown into a heartfelt mission — one that spreads connection, pride, and support across remote and rural Australia.

Bourkey’s Bootride started without a plan. Paul “Bourkey” Bourke, seeking to clear his head, set off across the country on his motorcycle, footy in hand, kicking it at ovals along the way. In those quiet moments, Paul noticed something that stayed with him: kids having a crack at footy — often barefoot.

Moved by what he saw, Paul began collecting and delivering brand-new football boots to young people in need. The movement hasn’t stopped since.

Paul’s story is deeply woven into the ride. Growing up as one of nine children in a family doing it tough, he knows what it’s like to wear hand-me-down boots from an older sibling. For him, Bourkey’s Bootride is about more than just the boots — it’s about pride, community, and the spark of hope that comes from owning something brand new, just for you.

“It’s not about charity,” Paul says. “It’s about giving a hand to people having a crack. There’s nothing like seeing the smile when someone laces up their very own new boots for the first time. That’s why I ride.”

Whether it’s a kid in the outback or a young adult trying to stay on track, Bourkey’s Bootride delivers more than footwear. It delivers connection, kindness, and a powerful reminder that someone believes in you.

This year’s ride will begin on Friday, June 13 at the Geelong West Giants Stadium, with local motorbike riders and AFL legend and Larrakia man Mathew Stokes sending Paul off on a 9-day journey to Kalkarindji via Katherine. Along the way, Paul will hand-deliver boots to remote communities doing it tough.

June 14th Preview: A rival rematch and an eight consecutive win on the cards

AFL Barwon writer Wil Spence previews this weekend’s men's football matches across the Geelong and Bellarine FNL competitions.

 

Geelong Football League

Bell Park vs St Albans

Hamlyn Park, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

A hotly contest expected between both sides who sit either side of the ladder, Bell Park looking for a fourth consecutive win, and St Albans looking to bounce back after a tough assignment against South Barwon.

Expect James Saker’s squad to apply the heat early, ranking elite for effective tackles, with Fraser Marris, Jeff Bermingham and Hamish Dawson all leading the way, contributing five or more tackles per game.

Rick Munn’s clearance game has been evident over the course of the first seven rounds for the Saints, rating above average.

Key players, Jed Warrin and Fletcher Keck both average 6.6 clearances per game, expect the Saints inside 50 counts to be supported by this statistic.

 

Colac vs St Mary’s 

Central Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

Both sides are coming off strong victories against their respective sides.

Sitting fourth and second, Colac and St Mary’s respectively, expect a great viewing for supporters of either side.

The Tigers contested possession and marking game rates elite in the competition, expect Seb Ross’s squad to be strong in the contest and control the football.

Tigers gun Jarrod Walters will be heavily relied upon in the coal face with his quick hands, averaging 16.6 handballs per game.

Luke Rayner’s outfit bounced back after a devastating defeat to St Joseph’s with a commanding win against North Shore, expect their scoring prowess to be an important part of their game, averaging 24 goals per game, to go with 64 inside 50’s.

Off-season returnee, Pat Dowling, expect to be his dynamic self, after kicking an astonishing 11 goals last week, he’s currently averaging an extraordinary 170 ranking points, to go with a tick under 28 disposals, and 4.8 goals per game.

Leopold vs Grovedale

Leopold Memorial Park, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

The Lions got their season back on track with a dominant performance against Lara and find themselves in the top five.

The Tigers were left licking their wounds after a devastating loss, almost overcoming a 22-point deficit at three quarter time against Bell Park.

Plenty to play out for both sides which should excite the competition.

Luke Kelly’s Lions play a high disposal brand of footy, ranking elite for both kicks and handballs.

The forward brigade could be dangerous with six players averaging over a goal a game, with Connor Giddings the main focal point, averaging 3.6 goals per game.

Jacob Spolding’s Tiger’s clearance game has been a dominant feature in the early part of the season.

Expect Ryan Abbott and William Ford to lead the charge, both averaging a whooping 9.9 and 7.8 clearances per game, respectively.

 

Newtown & Chilwell vs Lara

Elderslie Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

Newtown was after another large scalp of the competition, fortunately for Steve Johnson, his wish was granted with a hard-fought victory against top of the table, St Joseph’s.

A stark contrast for challenged Lara outfit, who were heavily defeated against Leopold, expect a bounce back from the Cats.

Steve Johnson’s side has put on a defensive masterclass, in the early parts of the season, conceding 8.5 goals per game.

Braden Hocking and Werribee-listed player Charlie Byrne are leading the way in the back half with intercept possessions, and intercept marks.

For Brett Henderson’s squad, turnovers by foot have punished their chances of controlling the football, and creating more opportunities inside 50, with a discrepancy of minus 82.4 effective kicks against opposing sides.

 

North Shore vs Geelong West Giants

Windsor Park, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

Either side comes into this game with disappointing losses, the Giants trailed Bell Park by 13 points at three quarter time but faded late.

The Seagulls are still looking for their first win of the season and would like to claim a scalp.

Mark Hounslow’s developing side will look to improve their forward 50 entries, averaging a mire seven effective kicks going inside 50, compared to 50.1 against opposing opposition.

An improvement in this statistic may contribute to more shots on goal, time spent in forward half.

Look to Greg Mallor’s side to utilize their kick to handball game to open the ground and create overlap against the Seagulls, rating above average in handballs and marks.

Giants gun Tanner Lewis returned for his first game of the season and was mammoth in the coal face with his clean hands, 21 handballs and tackling pressure, 10 tackles, expecting his presence to be felt.

 

St Joseph’s vs South Barwon

Herne Hill, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

In tough conditions, St Joseph’s were given their first loss of the season against Newtown.

South Barwon on the other hand are coming off a strong showing against St Albans and are looking to continue their winning ways, currently sitting just outside the top five, in sixth.

Ron Watt’s sides efficiency going inside 50 reflected their current position on the ladder, going at 56% inside 50 compared to the competition average of 44%, deeper entries inside 50, their plus two and rate elite for marks inside 50.

Off-season recruit, Mitch Chafer is starting to hit his straps and will be dangerous up forward, averaging 1.8 goals per game.

Mark Neeld’s squad are after a big victory to give the competition a scare, the Swan’s scoring prowess is evident, averaging 16 goals per game, rating above average, while rating above average for contested possessions.

Jonty Broughton and Sam James will be strong in the contest, both averaging over 10 contested possessions per game, to go with over 4.5 clearances per game.

 

Bellarine Football League

Drysdale vs Barwon Heads

Drysdale Recreation, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

The Hawks are looking for a fifth consecutive victory after a clinical win against Modewarre.

The Gulls on the other hand were outclassed against the form team of the competition in Queenscliff and will be after a win to stay at a touching distance from the top five.

Ben Carmichael’s contested brand of footy has been evident over the past month, currently rating elite in contested possessions and handballs.

Expect the Hawks efficiency going inside 50 to be high, they’re currently plus 1.5 marks inside 50 across the competition. Tom Ruggles and Lachlan Dalgleish are leading the way for their forward line.

Sam Schaller’s stoppage game will be vital if they’re to match the Hawks strong on-ball brigade, currently the Gulls are plus 2.5 for scores from stoppages.

Look at Charlie Hurst, averaging 8.1 contested possessions, and Jake Whybrow to be dangerous in congestion and inside 50 respectively.

 

Geelong Amateur vs Modewarre

Queens Park Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

A fourth consecutive victory is on the cards for the Amateur’s, after a tight tussle against Anglesea, all cylinders a firing with fans hoping to see continued success.

Modewarre are looking to rectify a difficult two weeks, with a strong performances against a quality outfit, a major scalp is required if Modewarre wants to push for finals aspirations.

Player coach, Sam Lloyd’s squad’s uncontested brand of football has demonstrated their willingness to open the ground and move the ball with pace.

Ammos are currently plus 7.7 for inside 50 marks, and plus 18.9 uncontested marks, expect Mitch Day to have plenty of opportunities inside 50, averaging 4 goals per game.

Mark Hovey’s side has given up 31.3 effective disposals to either side, if they can rectify their turnover game by hand expect the Warriors system to be working in transition.

Veteran Joshua Finch will lead the charge averaging just under 30 disposals per game.

Queenscliff vs Anglesea

Queenscliff Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June

What shapes like the match of the round, Queenscliff comes in to this match as the form team of the competition, astonishingly looking for an eight consecutive victory.

Anglesea are looking to respond after a tough loss to ladder leader, Geelong Amateur, after leading by two points at three quarter time.

Heath Jamieson’s squads forward half pressure has been evident over the last two months, currently plus 3.8 for forward 50 tackles, and plus 3,2 for forward pressure acts.

Coutas forwards, Jordan Monahan and Jonty Rush will look to be dangerous, averaging 2.6 goals, and 1.4 goals respectively.

Jordan Keras’s teams contested brand of football will be on display, the Roos currently are plus 13 for ground ball gets, and plus 27 for effective handballs.

Expect plenty, chain of handballs around the ground to punish the Coutas on the rebound, with Lachlan Smith and Max Virgona leading the way, both averaging 11.7, and 9.9 handballs per game.

 

Ocean Grove vs Torquay

Shell Road Recreation Reserve, 2:10PM, Saturday 14th June, 2025

Ocean Grove were gallant in defeat against Portarlington last week and will be looking to put in another consistent performance.

Torquay got their season back on track last week, defeating the developing Newcomb.

With percentage on their side, the Tigers will look to consolidate a spot in the top five with another strong performance this week.

Newcomb vs Portarlington

Coming off a win, the Dees will look to continue their momentum and make it a sweep of wins against undermanned Newcomb side who hope to get some crucial players back from injury.

Tony Mirabella’s squad have emphasized a tough contested brand of football; the Power are plus 1.6 in centre clearances but lack polish with disposal by foot. They’re currently minus 33.8 effective kicks, hurting their efficiency going inside 50.

Veteran duo, Finn Anscombe and Jack Duke will lead the charge at either end of the ground, Anscombe averaging 8.3 intercept possessions, and Duke averaging 3.2 goals per game.

Nathan Storer’s outfit will look to continue their high-pressure style of play, ranking above average for inside 50’s and effective tackles.

Disposal efficiency has been an area the Dees have looked to improve, cleaner looks going inside 50 will put pressure on the Powers’ backs.

Key ruckman, Scott Greenhough will play a major role in the midfield, averaging 43.3 hit outs per game, and nine clearances per game.
