This weekend, the final round of the 2023 Geelong Football Netball League season takes place. In the A Grade division of netball, the final five teams that will advance to finals are already set, however their standings on the ladder could change depending on the results on the weekend.
Here are some of the possibilities that could occur:
LEOPOLD vs NEWTOWN & CHILWELL
If Leopold win:
-They would finish their season on a high note. The highest they could finish is seventh, provided Bell Park defeat St Mary’s, and the lowest they could finish is eighth.
-They would snuff out any chance Newtown & Chilwell had of finishing the season in top spot (Newtown & Chilwell would need to beat Leopold and would also need South Barwon to beat Colac).
If Newtown & Chilwell win:
-They would finish the season on top of the ladder if Colac lost to South Barwon. If Colac beat South Barwon, they would finish second. Regardless of the result in their game against Leopold, they cannot drop lower than second.
-If they finish first, they will have next week off and then play in the second qualifying final, and if they finish second, they will play either St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon in the first qualifying final.
GEELONG WEST vs ST JOSEPH’S
If Geelong West win:
-They would overtake St Joseph’s on the ladder and take third spot. They would only be at threat of losing third spot if South Barwon beat Colac comprehensively.
-The highest they could finish is third, meaning they would play either Newtown & Chilwell or Colac next week in the first qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, meaning they would play St Joseph’s once again in an elimination final.
If St Joseph’s win:
-They would secure third spot going into finals, meaning they would play in the first qualifying final next week against either Colac or Newtown & Chilwell. They can’t finish higher than third.
SOUTH BARWON vs COLAC
If South Barwon win:
-They would put Colac’s place atop the ladder at jeopardy if Newtown & Chilwell beats Leopold.
-If they beat Colac comprehensively and Geelong West defeated St Joseph’s, they would be a chance to finish third.
-Third is the highest they could possibly finish, meaning they would play Newtown & Chilwell or Colac in next week’s qualifying final. The lowest they could finish is fourth, and in that situation, they would face off against either St Joseph’s or Geelong West in an elimination final.
If Colac win:
-They would be unable to concede top spot due to their percentage.
-Win or lose, they cannot drop out of the top two. They would play in either the first qualifying final next week against St Joseph’s, Geelong West, or South Barwon, or in the second qualifying final the week after.
With six rounds left of the GFNL A Grade Netball competition, we take a look at the race toward finals. Every game is critical, and for those that are far up on form, it’s about securing that top spot. This piece looks at the 2022 finals contenders.
Newtown & Chilwell
They have only lost one game in three years. Their unbeaten record finally came to an end this year by a determined St Albans. Since their defeat, they haven’t missed a step. They currently hold the top spot on the ladder, but there are still five matches to play including the bye and they are only ahead of Colac and St Albans by four points. They vs St Albans in Round 15 and Colac in Round 18. These games will shape the top spot.
The Run Home: Leopold, Geelong West, St Albans, Bye, St Mary’s, Colac
Colac
Currently in second place on percentage, the Tigers have had a consistent season all year. Their biggest win was against St Albans. It was the round after the Supersaints defeated the Eagles. Colac’s losses have come from a formidable South Barwon in Round 9, and Newtown & Chilwell in Round 5. The Tigers’ run home is tough, but that minor premiership is well within reach. However, they will have to beat the Swans in Round 16 and knock off the ladder leaders in Round 18 if they want the week off come finals time.
The Run Home: St Mary’s, Bell Park, Leopold, South Barwon, Lara, Newtown & Chilwell
St Albans
The Supersaints stunned the GFNL A Grade Senior Netball competition when the Eagles fell to them in Round 4. The convincing win saw St Albans as the new team beat, but they then suffered losses two weeks in a row. Their first shock loss came from Geelong West in Round 5, followed by Colac in Round 6. These losses have seemed to humble St Albans as they have been solid ever since. They have a few challenges in the following weeks, but much like Colac, that top spot is still up for grabs.
The Run Home: Bell Park, Leopold, Newtown & Chilwell, Lara, Bye, Geelong West
South Barwon
One game separates the Swans from Colac and St Albans. South Barwon is another flag contender, but they will want to remain vigilant as teams become more desperate each round. In Round 3, the Swans had their first loss against a convincing St Joseph’s. Like many, they were also unable to rise to the challenge of Newtown and Chilwell. The following week they fell to St Albans but bounced back in Round 9 to beat Colac. The Swans have already had the bye and being six points ahead of Geelong West, they have a good run home with Colac being the hardest of the bunch. Still, no wins are guaranteed.
The Run Home: Lara, St Joseph’s, St Mary’s, Colac, Leopold, Bell Park
Geelong West
It’s been an interesting season for Geelong West. They managed to collect a huge scalp early this season with a win over St Albans but haven’t beaten any other team higher than their current ladder position. So far, the Giants have fallen to Colac, Newtown & Chilwell, St Joseph’s, South Barwon, and drew with Bell Park. They have a mixed run home of games they should win but the pressure will be on to maintain their fifth spot. With upcoming games of having to face St Alban and Newtown & Chilwell, their resolve will be tested.
The Run Home: Grovedale, Newtown & Chilwell, Lara, Bell Park, St Joseph’s, St Albans
St Joseph’s
With defeats over South Barwon and Geelong West, Joey’s are every chance to sneak into the fifth position. However, St Joseph’s has not had a good run in recent games. If they have a sudden change in luck next weekend, they are every chance to play in the Finals. Another win over South Barwon would make the perfect start. Their run home also looks easier than most.
The Run Home: Bye, South Barwon, Grovedale, St Mary’s, Geelong West, Lara
Bell Park
After a tough road through the beginning of the season, Bell Park managed to pinch some decent wins in the second act. They just got over St Joseph’s by one goal, a draw against Geelong West, and two very convincing wins over Leopold and St Mary’s. They do have an extremely difficult run home. They will have St Albans, Colac, Geelong West, and South Barwon to contend with. If the Dragons make Finals, they deserve to be there.
The Run Home: St Albans, Colac, Bye, Geelong West, Grovedale, South Barwon

The AFL Barwon Region will be represented in the Super Netball Reserves competition in the 2025 season, with Emily Green being selected in the Netball Australia Talent & Development Squad.
Members of this squad will be drawn on for Super Netball Reserves allocation and additional development opportunities, including targeted sessions and Suncorp Super Netball match day involvement with high performance umpire coaches.
A high performing A badged panel umpire in our region for several seasons, Emily was named as the AFL Barwon Netball Umpire of the Year in 2023 for her outstanding season.
Emily was also selected as one of four umpires selected from Victoria to officiate at the 2024 National Netball Championship in April this year.
AFL Barwon congratulates Emily on her selection in the Netball Australia Talent & Development Squad for next season.
The full list of the 2025 Netball Australia umpiring squads can be found here.
AFL Barwon in consultation with Grovedale Football Netball Club and Netball Victoria, have determined that all fixtured home games at Burdoo Reserve will now be played inside the Grovedale Secondary College Stadium for the 2025 season.
During the course of the 2024 season, it has been identified that following the implementation of rolling substitutions and in conjunction with the current court profile, the Burdoo Reserve Netball Courts have experienced higher levels of congestion on the team-bench sideline, leading to an increased risk profile.
Grovedale FNC has identified this increased risk profile, and proactively sought support from AFL Barwon and Netball Victoria about alternatives to mitigate this factor moving forward.
The Club has been proactive in their discussions and have been actively working with Local Government to improve the conditions of their outdoor courts, and both AFL Barwon and Netball Victoria are supportive of these actions.
While permission to use the indoor courts has been granted for season 2025, Grovedale FNC are aware that they must continue to work towards the redevelopment of the Burdoo Reserve courts as a high priority.
All parties will continue to monitor and review the status of both court arrangements, responding to any issues that arise throughout the season.
AFL Barwon would like to acknowledge the work Grovedale FNC has completed to date, to ensure a more permanent solution to the issues their courts face can be found. The Club has been working proactively in this space, and we support their endeavours to have their netball facility redeveloped.
We thank the Geelong Football Netball League Clubs in advance for their support of Grovedale FNC for 2025 season, and look forward to the ongoing improvements at the outdoor site.

Emma Daffy is an enthusiastic and competitive netballer whose love for the sport has given her wonderful opportunities with fantastic success. Emma is a star goal attack for Newcomb in the AFL Barwon All-Abilities League but also plays for Lara in the mainstream Saturday Geelong FNL E Grade Competition.
Beginning in 2017, Emma initially started her All Abilities netball journey at her local Football and Netball Club, Lara. Emma found she wanted to test and expand her netball skills even further, leading her to join the mainstream competition. Emma states, “I just wanted to challenge myself. Get my intensity up, get my cardio up, make sure I get a good old challenge out there!”
It is impossible for Emma to decide what competition she likes more but finds the level of intensity and competitiveness to be the primary difference between the two. Her sense of enthusiasm and pride for both leagues is undeniable. Emma explains, “Both sides bring up a good, energetic, fun game.”
Lara Football Netball Club Netball Director, Di Van Doren always knew Emma would have the skillset and ability to be able to play both netball competitions. “Emma has always been a willing participant in all our club combined training sessions. We wanted Emma to decide when the time was right for her and have the confidence to give it a go. She has amazing skills, and her knowledge of the game is astonishing.” Di acknowledged that Emma is a much-loved member of Lara’s E-Grade team and provided valuable input into group sessions and regularly attended Club social events.
The Newcomb Power Football and Netball Club is a strong leader for the All-Abilities league, having both inclusion Netball and Football sides. Scott Smith, Newcomb’s All-Abilities Coordinator, explains inclusivity is central to the club’s values and the All-Abilities program is a valuable and vital part of the club’s DNA. Smith says, “Our inclusion programs sit alongside our mainstream and all members have embraced the programs. Providing the opportunities is very rewarding.”
Emma believes in encouraging other players of the All-Abilities League to get involved in mainstream competitions as a way of breaking down barriers between the two competitions. She suggests, “Just give it a crack! Have a go and do your best out there!”. Di Van Doren supported this by encouraging clubs to keep an open mind when considering providing opportunities for All Abilities players in mainstream Netball.
Smith agrees the biggest barrier to blending All-Abilities players into the mainstream competitions is player confidence. He says, “Once they [All-Abilities players] feel comfortable, there are no issues.”
Emma’s passion and dedication to netball have led to some great achievements through selection for the Marie Little OAM Shield. Emma represented Victoria back in 2019 in Brisbane, bringing home a silver medal. She represented Victoria a second time in Sydney last year, bringing home not only another silver medal, but was also awarded Most Valuable Player overall for the competition. She says, “It was exciting and a bit of a shock”.
However, the challenge doesn’t end there. Emma’s competitive spirit prevails as she set her sights on achieving more this year. Emma states, “I am wanting to bring back the gold instead of the silver!”.
If there are any players looking to play in any of the AFL Barwon All Abilities Netball Competitions, please contact AFL Barwon Head of Netball, Sophie Allison (

This year saw record numbers trial for our eight AFL Barwon teams across Bellarine FNL and Geelong FNL, with one 13&U team, two 15&U teams, and one 17&U team in each league.
Congratulations to all athletes, coaches, and umpires for their dedication and achievements, making this a standout year for AFL Barwon.
Three coaches from the program have outlined the highlights of their experiences, with all results listed below.
The GFNL 15&U team went through the Barwon Junior Competition undefeated. We had a very talented group of players who were all extremely versatile and we made the most of the time we had together. We developed strong connections on and off the court and I was honoured to be part of such a special group of players.
The highlight of our season was when Bellarine pushed us into on overtime game for the Grand Final. The girls were able to call on those connections and get the job done, finally winning after a tense and exciting match.
The Association Championships was a challenge for us, having to replace our starting GD a week before the tournament and having no practice time, but again the girls faced the challenge with gusto. We played really well against the top teams, just falling short and showed that the experience will be incredible for all the players.
We had 6 of our girls Talent Identified and I’m so excited to see all the players develop over the next couple of seasons.
Coming into this program for the very first time, has been one of the best experiences. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this team become very close, very quickly and this bond only grew stronger throughout the season. They motivated each other and every game, training session and the Association Championship’s displayed the closeness.
Coaching these girls was a privilege and was something I looked forward to every week. They never failed to put a smile on my face, and we were guaranteed to have a laugh. From the first game it was clear this team had depth, it didn’t matter who was on the court, they looked like they had been playing together for years. It was amazing to see their netball knowledge expand over the season.
These girls made it to the semi-finals of the Monday night competition and despite not making the Association Championship finals, displayed a team brand of netball, every single game. I am beyond proud of these girls and being able to form strong bonds with them all. I absolutely hope to do this again next year!
This program is nothing but positive and uplifting for their netball journeys and an opportunity to grow at a coaching level.
What an enjoyable and successful BJNC season for the U17’s GFL rep side. We started the season strong playing Colac and Bellarine in the first 2 rounds, coming away with strong wins. After round 3, we only had one more win for the season and finished 3rd on the ladder. We had a few injuries and illnesses throughout the remainder of the season and did not play with our whole team again until the first final. It was great to see the girls come together and win the 1st final against Bellarine and make it into the Grand Final. Going into the Grand Final we did not win against GDFL Raiders, who finished top of the ladder undefeated. The Grand Final was close all game, but we came away with the win!!! The Premiership was ours!!
What a big day it was at Associate Champs on Sunday 25th May. Our first of 9 games was at 9am. We won 4 games against some strong and talented teams for the day. The team showed their skills and talent and came close to winning a few games against the top sides.
It has been enjoyable and rewarding to coach all 11 girls and watch them develop as individuals and as a team over the 4-month season/program.
Three teams from each league competed in the Barwon Junior Netball Championships, a competition entered into by representative teams in the region. This competition helps our players, coaches and umpires develop their skills against the very best in the region. All six teams made finals for this competition with some hard-fought battles during the final’s series, including extra time. We had 4 teams make the Grand Finals with the Geelong FNL 15&U and 17&U teams both taking out the Championship.

Our two 15&U reserves teams competed in GCNA’s Monday Night Junior competition. This competition is an open junior competition, with our teams graded in the highest division, often playing against older opposition. Both teams had amazing seasons, playing against each other in the first round of finals, before Bellarine FNL continued to play in the grand final.

All eight representative teams took part at Association Championships this year, with some tough battles against strong teams throughout the day. Congratulations to our BFNL 15&U Reserves team for making it to the first round of finals. We were fortunate to have 12 athletes’ talent identified in the 15&U age group and invited to trial for the 2024 Talent Academy later this year. Eight umpires also officiated for Association Championships with multiple officiating Finals and invited to the junior umpire program.
Congratulations to all athletes and coaches involved in this program, as well as the umpires who represented the Leagues.
This year AFL Barwon also took an inaugural All Abilities team to compete in Association Championships. Congratulations to the players that were selected from each club. It was a fantastic day for the team, with some very competitive games. The team made it through to finals, taking out third place in a down to the wire match. Everyone loved it and we will certainly continue this into the future.
