AFL Barwon is proud to have a young talented trio picked in the final Under 19 Energy Safe Vic Country squad.
Newtown midfielder Mitch Diamond, St Mary’s and former Geelong Falcon captain Jack Blood, plus St Joseph’s live wire forward Jackson McLachlan have all been selected for the Under 19 Challenge Cup clash against the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) on July 8.
The trio are part of coach Damien Sexton’s final 25-man squad in the annual clash, which provides the next crop of community football greats with an opportunity to showcase their talents.
The Energy Safe Vic Country Under 19 squad has recorded emphatic victories in its last three encounters against VAFA, the most recent being a 44-point win at Mernda Reserve last season.
Newtown’s Diamond has shone in his first season of senior football, while Blood has seamlessly slotted into a St Mary’s team who made last year’s GFL Grand Final. His form culminated in not only selection in this squad, but a VFL debut for Geelong last weekend. St Joseph’s McLachlan also has stood out as one of the GFL’s form players this season straight out of the TAC Cup system, causing problems for opposition defences roaming the half forward line. The 19-year old represented the victorious GFL Interleague squad at the MCG earlier in the season.
The Under 19 Challenge Cup will kick off at 11.15am at Frankston Oval before the highly-anticipated Brian Molony clash between WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country and VAFA at 2:15pm.
