Author: James Szabo AFL Victoria

Sacred Heart College Geelong is the 2016 Herald Sun Shield Division Two Girls premiers after defeating Woodleigh College by seven goals at a rainy IKON Park on Tuesday.

The wet weather wasn’t enough to dampen the spirits of Sacred Heart, who led from start to finish with a dominant display of classy football.

It was a tight, hotly contested game in the first quarter, with the conditions ensuring a high number of tackles and stoppages would be a feature throughout.

Sacred Heart had the majority of the play, but could only muster up a two-point lead at the break, courtesy of Woodleigh’s defensive pressure.

Sacred Heart finally showed some of their exciting best in the second quarter, with Vic Country Youth Girl representatives Olivia Purcell and Lucy McEvoy dominating the term in style.

McEvoy provided constant entry into the forward 50, while Purcell kicked three goals in a matter of minutes to give her side a 21-point lead at half-time.

It was a tighter affair in the third quarter as Woodleigh stepped up their high intensity tackling once more, although couldn’t apply any scoreboard pressure.

Sacred Heart however, were able to convert their opportunities and take a 25-point lead into the final break.

The girls from Geelong continued their ascendancy in the last term, kicking another two goals and keeping their opponents scoreless.

Sacred Heart’s Lily Mithen and Denby Taylor carried on the impressive form they had shown all day to help their side cruise to a 38-point victory. The final score 6.5 (41) def 0.3 (3).

Despite the loss, Woodleigh captain Meg MacDonald was awarded with the best on ground medal for her team after working hard all day to ensure her side put in a gallant effort, while Olivia Purcell took home best on ground honours for Sacred Heart.
