Region Young Stars To Represent Vic Country

A host of talented youngsters throughout the AFL Barwon region have been selected to represent Vic Country at both under 16 and under 18 levels, for this year’s AFL National Championships.

A dozen Geelong Falcons dominate the under 18’s Vic Country side, whilst there are five AFL Barwon region representative’s in the under 16 squad.

UNDER 18’s

Leading the Under 18 Vic Country side will be Falcons skipper and Bell Park product James Worpel, a huge accolade for the midfielder who will co-captain the side for a five-game series that begins on the Queens Birthday weekend in Sydney.

Joining him will be Colac pair Ethan Floyd (brother of Geelong VFL’s Campbell) and Cooper Stephens, plus St Mary’s duo Harry Benson and Matthew Ling. Tom McCartin (St Joseph’s), brother of St Kilda number 1 draft pick Paddy McCartin is in the squad, along with Joeys teammate and All-Australian representative Sam Walsh. Falcons leading goal kicker Gryan Miers (Grovedale), Edward McHenry (Barwon Heads), David Handley (Geelong West Giants), Josh Jaska (Anglesea), and Cassidy Parish (Winchelsea), brother of Essendon midfielder Darcy, also feature as the lone representatives from their clubs.

The Falcons have had an unbeaten start to the season and have the most players in the squad of any TAC Cup team. McHenry and Walsh are among seven-bottom aged players, while Jaska is one of six 19-year olds.

UNDER 16s

The under 16 Vic Country side is also well represented from around the region. The five players selected all represent different clubs, with players including Kiedan Rayner (St Mary’s), Jeremy Goddard (Geelong Amateurs), Cooper Stephens (Colac), Jesse Clark (St Joseph’s) and Ocean Grove’s Tom Richardson.

Richardson is the son of Adam Richardson, who played two games for Adelaide in 2001 and was a star in the SANFL and in the BFL for Drysdale. The Ammos’ Jeremy Goddard is the brother of current St Kilda defender Hugh Goddard.

Vic Country will face rivals Vic Metro at Punt Road oval on June 24 before finishing the carnival at Simonds Stadium against South Australia on July 5.
