Local Derby Highlights Interleague Fixture

2019 shapes as the biggest ever year of Interleague football in the AFL Barwon region and a bumper weekend for supporters, with the announcement this morning that the Bellarine Football Netball League (BFNL) and the Geelong and District Football Netball League (GDFNL) will face each other for the first time in 40 years, whilst the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) will have the opportunity to regain their number one ranking in the state next season.

The BFNL and GDFNL will clash for the first time in Interleague football since 1978 due to a re-shuffling of the 2019 Community Championship fixture, and it will be the first match between two sides in the region since the GFL defeated the BFL in 2006. The GDFL defeated Heathcote & District FL in last year’s Interleague fixture. The match will be at a to be decided venue in the Bellarine region.

The GFL will once again battle it out for the title of best community football league in the state after the number one ranked Eastern Football League- who dethroned the GFL as the top ranked league in 2018 after five years at the top of the rankings, will not be competing in the Community Championships in 2019. This mean the GFL have earned the right to duel with the Northern FL for top spot. The match will also be held on May 18th, in a to be decided venue in Geelong.

AFL Barwon Region General Manager Will McGregor believes the big Saturday of Interleague action in the region will be a landmark day.

“We are delighted to be hosting two high quality AFL Victoria WorkSafe Community Championship matches in our own backyard, including a contest between two sides in our region for the first time in 40 years,” McGregor said. “We are looking forward to working closely with the Northern FL and the GDFNL to ensure the match gets as much interest and exposure as possible, and give the best possible opportunity to showcase the best players across our entire region.”

McGregor added.

“The Interleague weekend of 2019 promises to be the biggest in recent memory for the many supporters from all around the AFL Barwon region, and we look forward to being able to showcase these matches and our leagues to them on our doorstep,” he said.

The Colac and District Football Netball League will be taking on the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL in Maryborough in 2019, competing for 27th spot in the rankings. The match will also take place on Saturday, May 18th.
