AFL Barwon will take on AFL Cairns in an Under 17 exhibition match on April 1st showcasing some of the best talent from two regions. The match will be at 11am, prior to the twilight BFNL fixture between Torquay and reigning premiers Geelong Amateurs at Spring Creek Reserve.
AFL Cairns make the trip down to Victoria every two years and have historically played against teams from the Ballarat Football League and Riddell District Football League. With some strong results on their last visit, AFL Goldfields have combined their teams creating the opportunity for AFL Barwon to try their lucky against the AFL Cairns boys.
AFL Barwon Football Coordinator Sean Atkinson said he was rapt with the opportunity to give some players a chance to play against a quality opposition in AFL Cairns. “Obviously with the timing of the match clashing with the Under 16 and Under 18 Geelong Falcons squad selections, it gives us the opportunity to play some players who may not played representative football before and others who didn’t make the Under 16 Falcons Squad” Atkinson said.
“The region is rich with talent, with some significant depth so it is a great opportunity for some players who might have just missed out on squads in the past. It’s a credit to our clubs the way they continue to develop high quality players.”
The Under 17 squad and further details will be announced in the first week of March.
