AFL Barwon Return to Play Strategy

Following productive discussions with the Geelong Football Netball League (GFNL) and the Bellarine Football Netball League (BFNL) Presidents, AFL Barwon wishes to inform its stakeholders of the process regarding a potential Return to Play for senior GFNL and BFNL football.

AFL Barwon will wait until the next State Government announcement- expected at the beginning of June, regarding the potential easing of restrictions before any definitive decision is made on the 2020 senior football season for both the GFNL and BFNL.

Whilst it remains AFL Barwon intention to return to play and the return to small group training protocols released this week and were undoubtedly a positive step, the health of our region can never be compromised and that remains paramount in decision making for players, coaches, volunteers and supporters.

As a result of the discussion with GFNL and BFNL Presidents, AFL Barwon is targeting the following process:

  • If the State Government announcement doesn’t provide a definitive path to a return to play for senior football in 2020, the AFL Barwon Commission will call a meeting at the earliest opportunity to end the 2020 GFNL and BFNL season at a senior football level only.

  • If the State Government advice still leaves the potential for a return to play, the Commission will meet on June 9 at their regular scheduled meeting and make a definitive decision on the 2020 season.

AFL Barwon would like to reiterate; this process is for senior GFNL and BFNL football only. All AFL Barwon competitions form an integral part of our entire region, and further decision regarding all senior and junior competitions will continue to be determined.

The health of our region has and will always be our number one priority. We would like to thank all our clubs and officials for their continued efforts.
