To the AFL Barwon Football & Netball Community,
I hope this note finds you and your family safe and well in an incredibly challenging time for us all.
With AFL industry announcements over recent days, we understand there is a growing level of uncertainty with the postponement of our season across all levels of the game. These are unprecedented and constantly developing times.
Following the AFL and AFL Victoria announcements of restructuring the business operations for the ongoing viability of our sport, AFL Barwon has also made the difficult decision to temporarily stand down the majority of our valued staff effective as of Monday, March 30, 2020, until Sunday, May 31, 2020. I am so proud of our team and the work we do, which has made these necessary steps extremely hard. We all have a role to play in stopping the spread of the COVID-19 virus and while we all love football and netball, the health of the Victorian community is our priority.
Temporarily, from Monday, March 30, our team will be comprised of a small core group who will be working on a part time basis, including myself. These staff are critical in this period acting as the conduit between AFL Victoria and our football and netball community and key stakeholders. Temporarily from Monday, March 30, our team will consist of Sean Atkinson, Georgia Hillman and myself. During the stand down period our staff will be working remotely, and the AFL Barwon office will be closed. Our leagues and clubs are the lifeblood of our game and we are committed to continuing to provide regular updates to you all.
It is an extremely challenging period for our sports and our people. It will take time and some extraordinary amounts of hard work, but we are up for it. We will bounce back, and we will be there with you.
We understand in these tough times that there are many questions being raised. We understand this and ask for your patience as we work in addressing the challenges in front of us as an industry. The AFL has prepared a set of Q&As that are available on www.play.afl and shared at www.aflbarwon.com.au and via our social media channels that will hopefully address many of your questions surrounding community football. Netball Victoria has also provided this information via https://vic.netball.com.au/covid-19-information
Right now, we ask for you to focus on the health and well-being of your family and friends as your number one priority. We ask that you respect the decisions and recommendations made, and ensure we are all doing our bit to support the broader community and health system.
Thank you again for your understanding and cooperation. Please look after yourself and your family and friends in these times, and we look forward to updating you further as soon as possible.
Thinking of you all,
Will McGregor Region General Manager- AFL Barwon
