Simonds Stadium Footy Wrap

St Mary’s have booked a place in the GFL Grand Final with a comeback win over Leopold in Saturday’s Second Semi Final. Trailing for the majority of the day, the Saints hit the front in the last quarter and held on for an 11 point win. Power forward Tom Gillies kicked 5 goals for the winners, whilst young Leopold forward Mitch Patten kicked four. Leopold will meet a flying Grovedale after they stormed home to knock out the reigning premiers St Joseph’s.

Tied at half time and tight throughout the third quarter, Grovedale kicked a couple of late third quarter goals to have a 20 point lead at the final break. That’s the closest the game got as the Tigers kicking 5 consecutive last quarter goals to run away with a 50 point win. Grovedale youngster Gryan Miers was the star of the day, kicking four goals in a very impressive display. Dale Carson kicked three goals for St Joseph’s while Brent Haintz worked tirelessly all day.

In the reserves games, Newtown & Chilwell won through to the Grand Final with a tough fought win over St Mary’s. A tight tussle all day had the game tied up at three quarter time, only for the minor premiers to four goals to one in the last quarter to run away with an 18 point win. Newtown’s Darcy Troop kicked three goals in the win with Zac Herman named the Eagles best.

St Mary’s will meet Grovedale in the Preliminary Final after the Tigers held on for a 16 point win against South Barwon. An impressive first half display gave the Tigers a 31 point lead at half time. Grovedale didn’t have it all their own way in the second half with the swans kicking the first 3 goals of the third quarter to close the gap to 11 points. That was as close as they got with a late Grovedale goal before the final break opening up a 3 goal gap. This was the difference in the end with the Swans going out in straight sets.

The match of the weekend though was in Saturday’s Second Semi Final Colts game between St Joseph’s and St Mary’s. Dominating the game for three quarters, St Mary’s looked to have the game won at three quarter time leading by 17 points. This wasn’t the case as a pumped up St Joseph’s kicked 5 goals to 2 in the last quarter including the one to hit the front with 10 seconds left on the clock. St Joseph’s Jack Scarlett was the main catalyst for the revival with 3 goals, whilst William Cann was St Mary’s best.

St Mary’s will need to be at their best though after an impressive Colac made light work of South Barwon. Colac dominated the game from the first bounce, kicking 4 goals to 1 in the first quarter. The Swans stemmed the flow in the second quarter holding Colac to 1 goal. Unfortunately this wasn’t enough to bring them back into the game as Colac ran away with the match, eventually running away 69 point winners. Colac’s Thomas Cahill and Luke Inglis kicked three goals each, whilst Jarrod Walters was the best player on the ground.
