Lions break premiership drought

Leopold have been crowned Geelong FNL Premiers for the first time running away with a 36 point win against St Mary’s. In a seesawing battle all day, both times shared the lead at the breaks with Leopold leading at three quarter time by just 6 points. A matured Lions outfit though got the best of a young Saints side kicking 6 goals to 1 in the last quarter. Leopold forward Brandon Howarth was the star of the show bagging 6 goals while GFNL Rookie of the Year Logan Wagener chimed in for 2. Leopold skipper Jai Thompson was declared the AFL Victoria Best on Ground Medalist which got the biggest roar of the day. St Mary’s veteran Chris Jones tried hard for St Mary’s whilst Zac Sherman was their leading goal kicker with 2. The medal presentation from the game can be watched here.

Earlier in the day, Newtown and Chilwell claimed the Buckley’s Reserves premiership defeating Grovedale by 36 points. A 6 goal third quarter did the all the damage for the Eagles racing out to a 45 point lead at the third quarter time break. Brandon Efthimiou was named the best on ground while Darcy Troop was giving the best player by the coaches after kicking 4 goals. Caleb Bacely kicked 4 goals for the Tigers while Jarred Martin was named their best.

In the colts grand final, a 6 goal last quarter including 3 from Best on Ground Patrick Killen handed St Mary’s it’s fifth consecutive Division 1 Premiership. Minor premiers St Joseph’s, looked to be in full control of the match midway through the third quarter. St Mary’s rallied late in the quarter with some late goals giving them an 11 point lead at three quarter time. This momentum swing changed the game with St Mary’s kicking 4 goals in the first 10 minutes of the  last quarter to all of the sudden be out to a 6 goal lead. This was thanks to some crafty work by Killen who had his hand in everything in the last quarter handing St Mary’s it’s 5th Colts premiership. The highlight of the day for St Joseph’s came in the third quarter with Jack Scarlett pulling down a 1 handed screamer which can be seen here.
