Geelong, Victoria: Former international coach and Australian national team defender Catherine Gillespie has been appointed as the head coach for the Geelong West Giants GFNL netball team.
In a coup for the netball division, securing the highly credentialed and experienced Gillespie heralds a fresh start on the eve of the club becoming the Geelong West Giants.
According to Geelong West St Peters Club President Paul Eastman, Gillespie’s appointment highlights the strength of the Geelong West Giants Sports Club’s culture and strategic direction.
“We have a rich history of netball success and we are truly honored and excited to have someone of the professional and personal calibre of Catherine leading our netball coaching,” said Eastman.
Catherine Gillespie played for Australia in 1988 and was an Australian team squad member from 1987-1992. She coached the Malaysian Commonwealth Games squad for 1995-1996, and from 1992-1998 held various State League and State Age head coaching positions in Victoria. Gillespie is also a recipient of the Australian Government Medal for services to sport. In recent years, she has been busy as the Managing Director of her consultancy Workplace Conflict Resolution and attaining multiple qualifications including a Master of Workplace and Employment Law (Monash University, Faculty of Law) and Master of Conflict Resolution (La Trobe University). She has also raised two boys.
“I am excited about my return to netball and the opportunities that exist for everyone in the club with this joint venture. I chose to engage with Geelong West Giants as I venture back into netball because of the strong positive culture and exciting new strategic direction of the club. I am looking to coach a group of females who are committed to training hard, developing their skills and playing tactical netball,” Gillespie said.
The GFNL’s Geelong West St Peters and the GDFL’s Geelong West Cheetahs have previously announced plans to form a joint venture and compete under the one brand – the Geelong West Giants from 2017. This is the first significant signing for the new club.
