Buckley’s Entertainment Centre Pledges $15K to Clubs, Umpires

Long-time AFL Barwon partner Buckley’s Entertainment Centre has generously donated $15,000 to all GFNL, BFNL and GDFNL clubs, as well as the AFL Barwon umpiring fraternity in a huge boost to our region in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following a board meeting on Tuesday night, Buckley’s ratified the decision to give 34 clubs across the region an additional $10,000, on top of their $5,000 entity contribution to each club. Clubs can use the contribution as they see fit.

“Over the period of three weeks, each one of them will receive $15,000,” Buckley’s chief Michael Tonks told the Geelong Advertiser. “They (clubs) still have some form of overheads, whether that’s insurances, whether that’s ongoing costs for power but clearly they’re not getting money from their gate takings, their canteens, their bars and I guess running their own functions as well.”

AFL Barwon RGM Will McGregor told the Geelong Advertiser he and the entire region is very appreciative of the support from Buckley’s, Mr Tonks and the Buckley’s board.

“On top of the very recent $5,000 entity payment, to make a further $10,000 contribution to clubs is a tremendous outcome and will alleviate pressure all clubs are facing,” McGregor said.

“All clubs will now be able to reassess their current financial situation and this will provide relief to those clubs that are rightly hesitating speaking to their current sponsors who are also finding it difficult during this time.”
