Meet the staff at AFL Barwon

Will McGregor

Regional General Manager

Will started his employment career as a Strength & Conditioning Assistant  with the Hawthorn FC in 2009 to 2010. Will then moved Football Operations Assistant with the VCFL in 2011 to then become the Community Football Operations Coordinator with AFL Victoria in 2013 until 2016.

Will is an AFCA Coaches Association Executive Member,  Level 2 Australian Rules Football Coach and holds a Player Development Manager Executive Certificate (AFLPA). He is currently completing the AFL Emerging Leaders Course and Post Graduate Certificate in Business Management at Swinburne University to compliment his completed Bachelor of Applied Science in Human Movement  at the University of Ballarat.

Will’s playing history involved representing Geelong FL, Ballarat FL, Mininera FL in Senior Interleague and represented both the VCFL State team in 2010, and AFL Victoria Country No. 2 team in 2015.

Michael Limb

Football Operations Manager

Mick was a primary school teacher for 20 years, mainly in Phys Ed and in his latter teaching years as a School Principal. During those years he also drove interstate and Central Australia coach tours.

He then started a business providing recent issue magazines for various companies across Australia for use in their waiting rooms.

Mick commenced at Football Geelong in 2003 as Junior Football Manager, and the following year he also became Senior Football Operations Manager.

He played 2 years at St Kilda FC in U19s and Reserve Grade, then 2 years with Sandringham and the next 2 years at Frankston in the VFA. Having moved around through teaching, he then played 2 years at Apollo Bay, 2 years at Mornington, 3 years at Frankston YCW and 2 years as Captain Coach at Branxholme Wallacedale. He also played District Cricket with Fitzroy and Prahran. At Queenscliff FNC, he coached Under 18s for 7 years and Reserves for 1 year as well as serving 3 years as club President.

Sean Atkinson

Football Coordinator

Sean started at AFL Barwon in December 2013 after completing a Sports Management Degree at La Trobe University. Sean worked at Cotton On Group for 8 years followed by stints with Paul Connors Sports Management and the AFL Coaches Association.


Sean has coached Under 16 & Under 18 football for 7 years at South Barwon FNC winning two Division 1 Under 16 premierships in 2009 & 2013. He also coached the Geelong Junior Football Interleague side for 4 years and was nominated for the Youth Coach of the Year in 2013.


Sean is currently completing a Masters in Business (Sports Management) at La Trobe University as well is being the Recruiting Manager for the Geelong Falcons.

Sarah Scott

Netball Operations Manager

Sarah joined the AFL Barwon team in 2012 as a university student on placement through Victorian University. Sarah is a member of the St Joseph’s Football Netball Club where she coaches, umpires and plays. Sarah has coached the Geelong Flyers from 2010 to 2013 and was assistant coach for the GFNL 17 and under representative team in 2014.

Sarah played junior representative for the BFNL from Under 13’s through 17’s, has played for the Geelong Flyers and also the Barwon Region.

Tayla Ellis

Netball Coordinator

After completing her degree in Sport Management at Federation University in 2016, Tayla worked at Tennis Australia for 4 months before coming back to Geelong to take up the role of Netball Coordinator at AFL Barwon.

Tayla also has a lot of volunteer work under her belt, helping out Cycling Victoria, Yachting Victoria, and the Geelong Cats at various events, just to name a few!

Having played for several netball clubs in the region, Tayla is passionate about promoting women in sport.

Jock Hillgrove

Director of Umpiring

Jason “Jock” Hillgrove has been involved in umpiring for 30 years.

A life member of Geelong Umpires and having umpired nearly 250 games has made a greater impact in the coaching and development of umpires in recent times.

Jock has served as a Geelong Umpires Board of Director, Umpire Coach and umpire. Having worked for 5 years with AFL NSW/ACT – Canberra as Umpire Development Manager serving the areas of the ACT, South and Far South Coast of NSW gaining experience at all levels of the game.

Now returning home and having been in the role of AFL Barwon Regional Director of Umpiring since February 2015, completing his AFL Umpire High Performance and Coaching Certificate (2016) brings experience, passion and enthusiasm to the  AFL Barwon Region.

Deb Thewlis

Accounts Administrator

Deb joined Football Geelong/AFL Barwon in 2008.

Deb has been heavily involved with sport for over 35 years.  Playing tennis for most of her life she became more involved with junior support following her two boys around both cricket and football seasons

Her involvement at club level includes:

Senior club secretary for six years

Luke Maher

Football Development Manager

Originally from Bungaree

Played football for North Ballarat in the VFL

Commenced with Lara in 1999 and was part of the 2002 GFL Premiership side.

Played at Drysdale from 2004 to 2010. Premierships in 2009 and 2010

Started with Football & Netball Geelong in April of 2009

AFL Victoria Football Development Manager from July 2013

Katie Geerings

Football Development Manager

Katie studied a Bachelor of Applied Science/Physical Education and Diploma of Education at Victoria University. After graduating, she spent two years working as a secondary school teacher at Lorne-Aireys Inlet P-12 College and Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College. Following a move to Queensland, Katie worked for Netball Queensland as a participation officer where she oversaw participation initiatives across the state, including the NetSetGO program, clinics and school holiday programs. She then moved into the role of market development officer at Queensland Cricket, where she worked to develop and promote MILO in2cricket and T20Blast programs, and also facilitated school based programs and worked to transition the students to be players and participants at their local cricket clubs.
